Switch from Windows to Linux

Many have thought of it, few have actually done it. A switch from the dominating operating system of the world, Microsoft Windows, to the open source alternatives. The first thing you should ask yourself is:

Why do I want to switch?

If the answer is that you want to try what linux is all about, have a look at the Ch.1 Try before you buy chapter, as this gives you more information about testing without you loosing any functionality of your current installation. If you have decided to to a permanent installation(in dual boot or just jump overboard directly) jump ahead to the second chapter. First off I'm going to use Linux as an example(hence the title), but these are general advices that can be applied to any open source operating system as Linux, BSD and the brand spanking new OpenSolaris. It's all a matter of taste. I will go deeper into this when choosing the distribution.
