Change of OS
After a in my opinion the horrible release of Ubuntu 9.04 I took the leap and changed to another distribution that seems a little bit more stable than Ubuntu. With the release of Fedora 11 it is quite a competent system with up to date programs and a more stable history. As always Ubuntu isn't Fedora and Fedora isn't Ubuntu. So one may ask why I'm not committed and support one distribution, but that's the beauty of FOSS software. There are alternatives and I'm not more committed to a single distribution than it's latest release, and currently Fedora is a better choice for me as the latest Ubuntu doesn't fit me at all.
Fedora by default doesn't ship with ANY proprietary software or software that isn't completely free. This is one major difference to the Debian/Ubuntu repositories which has the restricted archive that contains the non-free part like vlc and flash. To remedy this problem, quite a few project were started for the main purpose of supplying the software that Fedora wouldn't have in their archives. These were all merged into in site called RPM Fusion, that works in sync with any rpm based distribution. Also Adobe supplies a repository for flash. One major difference with RPM Fusion is that it follows the stable line of the software, and not like Debian/Ubuntu back ports fixes and keep older versions in their archives.
So in all. Fedora currently is a very good distribution that you with the help of the install DVD can modify to your specifications already from installation and like the *BSD if you have an active internet connection, you can fetch the latest archives directly from the up to date source. No need to spend an hour or two after the installation to download and patch your system.
